Completed in March 2024, this was a custom, blond A style oval hole, built for a customer who’s father had been a luthier himself. She had high expectations, along with an insight into the more nuanced details involved in its creations, and the attributes of various aspects of tone development. We had enjoyable conversations and became fast friends throughout the build and I’m happy to say that she was pleased in the end. This mandolin features:

  • x-braced Englemenn spruce top
  • tortoise shell binding top and tone hole
  • Rubner’s new line of A style tuners
  • James tailpiece in silver
  • 1 3/16″ width bone nut
  • Shop made ebony adjustable bridge/saddle
  • Adjustable truss rod and 3 piece laminate neck construction
  • Soft “V” neck profile
  • 10″ ebony 10″ radiused fingerboard with 5mm MOP dots and side markers
  • EVO gold medium frets
  • semi-gloss nitro finish

“Plays easily. Love the wider neck! Action is not too high. Neck profile was comfortable. Love the feel of the EVO frets – thanks for being willing to use those. Played for a couple of hours and had no hand discomfort  or fatigue. Great sustain throughout! Bell tone highs and upper mids. No tubbiness in the lows and has some complexity which is wonderful. Played through Old Time, Unger, Ostroushko, Irish, Italian, Latin and Classical. Strong clear notes, but tremolo is lovely and effortless too. She’s an ingenue right now, but this girl is going to age beautifully! Thank you so much for the whole experience Don!” Robin Walden, owner
